Member of the Board and their brief background :-

Sardar Patel Memorial Society (Trust), Chandrapur (M.S.), founded in 1959, is a society registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860 & 1950.

Imbued with the noble objectives of disseminating high quality technical education and to contribute to realization of the larger national goal of generating technical manpower that is up-to-date, armed with in-depth theoretical foundations & applied skills, morally upright, and patriotic in spirit, it started “Chandrapur Engineering College, Chandrapur” in 1983, which was subsequently re-christened as “Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering, Research & Technology, Chandrapur in 2000. The college is spread over 42 acres of land with a total built-up area of 35,000 m2.

The society lays strong emphasis on maintaining quality in all aspects of education, which is evident in the fact that the College has been awarded ‘A’ Grade by the Government of Maharashtra and its five programmes have been accredited by the NBA for a term of 3 years in February 2005.

Motivated with the mission of making the college a Centre of Excellence in Technical Education in the region, the college has also started a multi-disciplinary M. Tech. Programme in Energy Management System in the Department of Electronics & Power Engineering.

The Society realises fully well the importance of an institute’s constant interface with the industry and undertaking real-life projects. Accordingly, it has set up a Renewable Energy Park in association with MEDA, and a Fly Ash Utilisation & Characterisation Centre at the college.

To ensure smooth & systematic governance, the Society, which is ably led by Shri Shantaram Potdukhe, ex-minister of state for finance, Government of India, as its President, has formed several committees to look after the various aspects such as Purchase, Building & Development, Finance etc. A Governing Body, consisting of the following members, has been formed the apex body for regulating the satisfactory governance of the Society.

  • Research Focus

Research on Renewable energy integration & selection

Application of renewable energy sources & their technology is one of the emerging trends in engineering & technology, which are to be introduced at the village level. For which awareness programme as well as technical consultancy is required.
Assessment of the potential of different renewable sources of energy at the local level is prime important. The optimization of integrated renewable energy source of any village then worked out. According to which one can propose a model of energy (self) sufficient village. Planning any system need to follow some methodology. That includes collection of data, which represents the pattern of usage

The salient features of such work includes:

i. Energy demand analysis

ii. Cost calculation of RET application

iii. Pay back assessment

iv. Optimal selection of Hybrid model

v. Idea of decentralization or power generation & distribution

vi. Quality of power

vii. Environmental effect analysis

viii. Reliability assessment

ix. Social acceptance

The Energy Group of college is working with an NGO, Vruksha Mitra (on consultancy basis) at village Lekha Mendha.  Few dissertations of M.Tech. are aimed to follow above mentioned points.

Research on Energy Efficient Performance of Electric Conductors/Motors

The selection and laying of cables/ overhead conductors for power transmission in the Industries spread over large area of land are normally carried out as per standard IS Codes like 282, 398, 8130 etc. Similarly, it has been observed that blind addition of capacitor bank, based on the standard power factor correction chart, to improve the plant’s overall power factor, in order to avoid possible penalties from the State Electricity Boards, has put lot of scope for the Power engineers to really go for re-designing the entire process of selection with respect to following two significant features:

i. The cost of energy unit has increased many folds in last one decade and therefore, energy losses in conductors are of substantial quantity.

ii. The overall power factor does not reflect the plant power factor, which is more important from the energy conservation point of view, as it provides data to where the electric motors (which accounts for 80-85 % of the industrial load) are working efficiently or in-efficiently.
A work is going on to arrive at a set of new rules, which probably will optimize the selection of cables and incorporation of capacitors.

  • Industry Linkage

Industrial Linkage:

1. The college has developed I I IC (Industry, Institute, Interaction, Cell) with the local Industries. The Industries helps in Industrial tours, in plant Industrial Training as well as case studies for thesis work.
The main recognition won by us is the selection of Mr. Amit V. Datarkar, one of the PF student in Chaman Sponge Industry. Though the selection was through naukari.com as it’s a emerging phenomenon.

2. An NGO, Vrukshmitra, Chandrapur/Gadchiroli working in the area of Rural Electrification through Renewable Energy Sources in consultation with the energy cell of our college at Lekha Mendha Village
